What Determines Ankle Fracture Recovery Time?
Many uncomplicated ankle fractures need about six to eight weeks for bone healing, but that does not mean the ankle is ready for unrestricted activity at that point. Swelling, stiffness, weakness, and changes in walking mechanics commonly remain after the bone has healed.
A stable fracture treated in a boot may progress differently from a displaced fracture repaired with plates and screws. Those symptoms need medical attention, not a tougher home exercise routine.
Restoring Motion After Immobilization
When your physician clears you to begin ankle movement, stiffness is often the first obstacle. Immobilization protects the fracture, but it also limits the ankle joint's normal motion. Many people notice tightness when pointing the foot down, pulling it up toward the shin, or turning the sole inward and outward.
The goal is not to force motion through sharp pain. A physical therapist measures your range of motion and uses targeted mobility work, gentle hands-on treatment when appropriate, and exercises that match your stage of healing. Small improvements in ankle mobility can make a meaningful difference in walking, squatting, stepping off curbs, and going downstairs.

Once weight bearing is allowed, the focus shifts from simply getting around to walking well. It is common to favor the uninjured side, take shorter steps, or avoid pushing off through the recovering foot. These patterns can persist even when pain is mild.
A progressive program rebuilds the muscles that support the ankle, including the calf, shin, and smaller stabilizing muscles around the foot. It should also address the hips and trunk. Strong hips help control the position of the leg over the ankle, particularly during stairs, single-leg tasks, and uneven surfaces.
Walking progression needs to be deliberate. Transitioning out of a boot too quickly can increase soreness and swelling. Staying in it longer than necessary can reinforce stiffness and weakness. Your care team can guide the timing based on healing, gait quality, symptoms, and your physician's restrictions.
Footwear also matters. A supportive shoe with a stable sole may make the transition easier than a worn-out sneaker, flip-flop, or unsupportive sandal. Balance Training Is Part of Fracture Recovery

Balance training progresses from controlled standing exercises to stepping, single-leg work, direction changes, and uneven-surface tasks. For an active adult, it may mean returning to pickleball, running, golf, tennis, or recreational sports without hesitation.
The right progression is specific to the goal. Someone returning to a job that involves ladders, prolonged standing, or carrying equipment needs different preparation than someone whose main goal is walking the dog without pain.
Returning to Work, Exercise, and Sport
Being cleared for activity is not always the same as being ready for every demand of that activity. A person may be able to walk comfortably but still lack the calf strength, quick reactions, or ankle mobility needed for running and jumping.
Before returning to higher-impact exercise or sport, your therapist may assess walking and stair mechanics, single-leg balance, calf endurance, squat control, and landing or cutting movement when appropriate. These measures provide useful checkpoints and help identify remaining gaps that could lead to a setback.
A gradual return usually works better than trying to make up for lost time. Increase one variable at a time, such as duration, distance, speed, incline, or intensity. If pain increases significantly, swelling lasts into the next day, or your walking pattern worsens, the ankle may need more recovery time or a change in the plan.
