Dr. Cody Gunselman completed his undergraduate studies at Kent State University and went on to receive his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Cleveland State University. After graduate school, Cody chose to begin his physical therapy career as a contractor in clinics around the country that were in need of therapists. He valued gaining experience in multiple settings, learning from different clinicians, and was able to see the country in his spare time. Cody’s treatment areas include orthopedics, sports, vestibular, dry needling, blood flow restriction, and performance training. He has a passion for working with throwing athletes. He plans on obtaining his Level 1 CrossFit coaching certification.
One of the biggest philosophies Cody tries to empower in his patients is to simply be active. He feels that, “If you have a body, you are an athlete.” If you come to physical therapy, it’s likely because something is stopping you from doing things you either need to do or love to do, so rehab should include those specific activities. Cody feels the fitness industry has changed, and PTs have the skillset to help people continue to be active at higher levels. He has a vision of educating people that just as you have a primary care physician you regularly see, you can have a physical therapist you can see in order to achieve your goals. Physical therapists are your doctors for movement and injuries.
In his free time, Cody enjoys playing recreational sports which include playing golf and competing in softball/basketball leagues. While traveling around the country he picked up participating in CrossFit, which along with recreational sports leagues has helped fill his void for competition. He has a love for traveling and hiking. He’s excited to begin a new chapter here in the lowcountry.
We interviewed Jenna because on paper her resume was excellent, but it was her personality that sealed the deal. Dr. Jenna Stoner grew up in Bowling Green, Ohio where she played multiple sports. It was at DePauw where she was introduced to physical therapy through basketball and decided to major in Kinesiology and pursue physical therapy as a career. She attended the University of Dayton and graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Jenna brings a wide range of knowledge to the Lowcountry with her sports background and schooling. She is compassionate with her patients and is skilled in treating a wide range of ailments from sports injuries, to cervical and shoulder pathologies as well as vertigo. Dr. Joanne Price
Growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina, I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sport Science from UNC-Chapel Hill. I loved Chapel Hill so much that I stayed at UNC to earn my Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree in 2013. I furthered my physical therapy education and received my manual certification from Maitland becoming a Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist in 2018 as well as becoming dry needling certified. My areas of clinical interest include: orthopedics, post-surgical rehab and assisting athletes of all levels and ages return to the sport or hobby that they love. After going through 1 hip and 2 knee orthopedic surgeries myself, I am very familiar with the work and effort it takes to get back to the gym and sports pain free.
My husband and I are fortunate that the US Air Force moved our family to Charleston in 2019. Since then, he has separated and joined the Reserves but we loved the Lowcountry and decided to stay. Outside of the clinic, I spend the majority of my free time with my husband, 2 young kids and our border collie mix, Domino. I enjoy working out, going to the beach, exploring Charleston, being outside with the family and cheering on the Tar Heels!
Dr. Spencer Blackman
Spencer started working at Private Therapy Services after owning his practice in Rochester N.Y. for two and a half years. He joined the Private Therapy Services team after moving to Charleston S.C. with his wife and daughter when his wife got accepted into her medical fellowship at MUSC. Spencer has been working in outpatient physical therapy for six years after graduating from SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2016 with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Before that, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Slippery Rock University with his Bachelor’s in Exercise Science. He is a lifelong athlete who has training in performance and sport-specific enhancement and rehabilitation. He has additional experience in personal training and cardiac rehabilitation.
Spencer’s true passion lies in working with and treating patients suffering from chronic pain and conditions. He has spent the last three years of practice focused on learning how all aspects of the nervous system influence pain, recovery, and chronic mobility problems, as well as the ways to positively impact them. He has adapted the mechanisms of pain science interventions (laterality training and graded motor imagery) into a treatment system that targets the originating sources of chronic pain. He is trained in Autonomic Awareness Training (AAT) and Blomberg Rhythmic Movement Training (BRMT). He hopes to continue pioneering cutting-edge ways to resolve chronic pain through his research interests into chronic neurological conditions and the science of pain interpretation and protective responses.
When Spencer is not at work he enjoys spending time with his young daughter and wife. He and his wife love being outdoors and hiking and enjoy traveling the world to see new places and experience new things. He is always eager to hear about restaurant recommendations and hidden local gems.
Dr. Scott Shores
Dr. Scott Shores, DPT is a proud Maryland native – receiving his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland. He received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Lynchburg in Lynchburg, Virginia. Scott was told that PT school was easy so he decided to get married and have a son while attending school to make it a little more challenging. After graduating, Scott and his family moved to the Charleston area and he began working as a PT. He found himself in a clinic that treated too many patients at a time, so he joined PTS which gives him more one-on-one time with each client. The move has been great for him and his patients!
Scott is an avid runner and is all too familiar with the pain and injuries that people can experience. He knows firsthand how frustrating it can be to have limitations due to pain. He hates being told to rest or to stop running and exercising. He believes that we are designed to move and his goal is to help every patient start moving again or to help them move even better.
